8.7 Ethnomedicinal Reference

Ethnomedicine is the study or comparison of the conventional medicine established with their bioactive compounds in plants and animals and is anciently being practiced by various ethnic groups, especially those with little access to Western medicines.

Freshly reaped leaves are mentioned as motshatsha, whereas parched leaves are traditionally comprehended as Kgwaile in the indigenous South African Sepedi vocabulary. Motshatsha, a leaf vegetable recipe, is made by cooking untouched succulent leaves of the citron variant of watermelon along with mature tomatoes and added salt and is commonly consumed with starch staples, especially maize or sorghum porridge or gruel.

Watermelon has been used globally in traditional medicines. Ripened fruit in higher doses serves as a medic; the seeds from watermelon roots are all used for creating decoctions and are utilized in the remedy of urinary tract infections and bedwetting concerns. The fruit is considered to be a diuretic and is effective in the treatment of renal stones (Ikram et al. 2015). Studies from the 1980s show that watermelon consumption was suggested for hypertension, and preliminary research studies have been conducted on its antihypertensive activities. In the northern parts of Sudan, watermelon is used for burns, swellings, rheumatism, and as an excellent laxative. The rind of the fruit is recommended in specific cases of alcohol poisoning. For their high protein and fat content, seeds are also used in the improvement of infant nutrition (Hamzah et al. 2013).
